Below we try to answer some on the most commonly asked questions regarding the Winter Games NZ volunteering experience.
Do you provide transport to get us up to the mountain and back home?
Yes, we will provide free transport to and from Wanaka for all on-mountain roles at Treble Cone, Cardrona and Snow Farm. There will be one bus up in the early morning and one down in the afternoon after the competition has ended. If you want to stay on the hill, until the end of the day, you will need to make your own way down.
We no longer have buses driving over the Crown Range due to weather and road conditions and the length of time the trip takes. The following transport routes are available for on-mountain roles:
Wanaka to Cardrona
Wanaka to Snow Farm
Wanaka to Treble Cone
If you are Queenstown based we will endeavour to connect you with others to assist you in getting up to Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. You are, of course, welcome to drive yourself, but we cannot subsidise your fuel costs, sorry.
Transport is not provided for the in-town roles.
Do you provide any accommodation for volunteers?
Unfortunately, we don’t have any accommodation but we are happy to help connect you with local volunteers who are often very happy to rent/ donate space in their home to help out fellow volunteers.
Wanaka Accommodation – Tourist Information
Queenstown/ Frankton/ Arrowtown Accomodation – Tourist Information
Do we get free passes for skiing on the mountains?
If you are working a role that is on the mountain and requires you access your position by snow, we will give you a complimentary lift pass for the day. You will often get a couple of hours at the end of the day to ski but please understand that the competition may run longer if there is an injury or weather delay.
What do we get in exchange for volunteering?
We will provide you with lunch on the days you work during the event, transport for roles on the mountains, a volunteer gift, lots of new friends and the opportunity to support hundreds of world class athletes in striving for the top. You will be given specific information and training if required, and all volunteers will be well briefed by one of the crew.
What if I can’t ski or snowboard?
There are a variety of volunteer roles we need help with that are both sport and non-sport related, on and off snow, outside and inside on the mountain venues, and downtown roles in Wanaka, Queenstown, and Naseby.
I don’t have my own gear, do you have any deals for rental ski/ snowboard gear?
Currently, we don’t have any deals going with the mountains or shop but we will update you if this changes.
I’m having difficulty with the online system, can you help me to register, please?
Yes of course, just email me on email@example.com and I will help you with the sign-up process.
I’m on a Tourist Visa or Working Holiday Visa, can I volunteer with you?
Yes, we would love your help and legally you are allowed to volunteer as we are not paying you.
Are there any paid jobs available?
No, sorry, we have filled all of the paid positions for 2017
Is there an age restriction?
16 is usually the minimum but we are keen to see as many people involved as possible so please do get in contact and we will see what we can do.
I have volunteered previously at the Winter Games NZ and should be in your system but my login is not working, please help!
We have a new online volunteer management system from Better Impact which is now open for registrations. It requires you to make a new online profile and answer various questions about your skills and preferences. Once the roles are online it will allow you to select from all the jobs, locations and dates that suit you so that you are in control of your schedule. Or if you’d rather, we can help you choose a role based on your interests and where we need help most.
How long will I be needed each day?
Most of the roles up on the mountain associated with the competitions will require you to be on there from about 7am-1-2pm. You’ll then have the option to take the bus free bus home or make your own way.
Do I need any training?
No, we give a full briefing prior to the event plus everyone receives a detailed job description. However, if you do already have specific training or skills do let us know as we can put you into a role that uses your skills.
I’d like to meet some of the team to ask some questions, is there an opportunity for this?
To find out more about what’s involved in volunteering with The Winter Games NZ, please come along to meet the crew and hear what’s in-store for 2017.
Wanaka – Tuesday 25th July, 5-6pm at Gin & Raspberry Bar, Wanaka
Queenstown – Thursday 27th July, 5-6pm at The Sherwood Hotel

Where can I get a copy of the Volunteer Manual?
You will be able to download it here when it has been finalised. We will be saving trees and not printing the manual. If you require one, please contact me and I will arrange a printed one for you to collect.
